Label the relationship first
A transition is correct only when it expresses the relationship between the two surrounding ideas.
Make it repeatable
- Read the sentences without the blank.
- Label the relationship: addition, contrast, example, cause, or sequence.
- Choose a word from that family.
- Reread the whole passage for flow.
Watch the method in action
“The first design was inexpensive. ___, it failed after one week of use.”
- Inexpensive is positive; failing is a counterpoint.
- The relationship is contrast.
- “However” fits; “therefore” falsely claims the failure followed from low cost.
Use “however” or another contrast marker.
