Purpose questions ask about a sentence’s job: introduce, contrast, qualify, exemplify, or conclude.
Make it repeatable
- Read the sentence before and after the target.
- Name the function in a verb phrase.
- Match an option to the function, not just the topic.
- Reject descriptions that overstate the author’s attitude.

- “However” signals contrast.
- The new sentence introduces evidence against the old theory.
- Its job is not to summarize or praise the old theory.
