The sentence structure determines the verb and the phrase it modifies. Read past interruptions to find the real subject.
Make it repeatable
- Find the main subject and finite verb before choosing a form.
- Use time clues to select tense; do not let a nearby noun control agreement.
- Place a modifier beside what it describes.
- Read the full sentence for a clear pronoun reference and parallel structure.

- The main subject is collection, not fossils.
- Collection is singular.
- The prepositional phrase “of fossils” does not control the verb.
