Find the main point before the options
A central idea is what the whole short passage is doing, not one true detail inside it.
Make it repeatable
- Read once for subject and shift: what is being described, challenged, or explained?
- State the main point in your own short sentence.
- Eliminate options that are too narrow, too broad, or opposite to the passage.
- Check the remaining choice against the first and last sentences.
Watch the method in action
A passage describes a new sensor, then explains that it detects pollution faster than older methods.
- Subject: the sensor.
- Purpose: explain its speed advantage.
- Reject an option about pollution in general; it is broader than the passage.
A strong summary says the sensor improves the speed of pollution detection.
